Foundational Reading Support
Welcome to Foundational Reading Support at Jie Ming
Students who need extra reading support in grades three, four and five may qualify for SIPPS Reading Intervention Instruction. This instruction happens during their regular English class in a small group setting.
What is SIPPS?
SIPPS stands for Strategic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Irregular Sight Words. This curriculum is well-research, meets the Minnesota State Statute laws (Laws of Minnesota 2023, Chapter 55, Article 3, Section 2) and is based on the large scientific body of reading research that supports the following:
"Evidence-based literacy instruction is explicit, systematic, and includes phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, oral language, and comprehension that can be differentiated to meet the needs of individual students."
What is the Purpose of SIPPS?
Overview of the SIPPS Program The SIPPS program is a multilevel, differentiated foundational skills program that develops the word-recognition strategies and skills that enable students to become fluent and confident readers and writers. The outcome is to develop independent, fluent readers who read with accuracy and automaticity. SIPPS instruction is organized by levels, and each level addresses specific aspects of age-appropriate foundational skills instruction. The organization of SIPPS instruction assures there is not a “one size fits all” approach; rather, the students are placed at their instructional points of need and are provided differentiated foundational skills instruction.
Jie Ming’s SIPPS teacher is Mrs. Athena Goff. Please reach out to her with any questions you may have regarding the SIPPS Reading Intervention program or how your student can qualify for this extra support. Her email is: athena.goff@spps.org
