Ms. Melissa Hansen
Hi! My name is Melissa Hansen and I am the licensed school counselor at Jie Ming Mandarin Immersion Academy. This is my second year at Jie Ming and I'm excited to continue to get to know the students and famillies!
I attended the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities to earn my bachelors degree in Psychology, while also studying Family Social Science and Spanish. After working as an employment counselor for some time, I returned to the University of Minnesota to study Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology and obtained my K-12 School Counseling license. As a high school counselor, I loved being able to help students set goals for their future and plan for wherever life was going to take them, but I missed being able to connect with students in the classroom. I decided to step away from high school counseling and enter the world of elementary school! I love working with young children and love the family and community at Jie Ming!
Growing up I lived in five different states and two different countries, so traveling is one of my favorite things to do. I have three sons and my husband is a high school physics teacher. In addition to traveling, in my spare time I enjoy gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, and camping.
My Role
As a school counselor, I work to help students be the best version of themselves and to have the tools they need to be successful in the future. By supporting students in the three domains of school counseling (academic, career, and social/emotional development), I help them get to where they want to be! The standards and frameworks of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) guide the work that I do in classroom lessons, small group instruction, and individual student meetings.
